know this. because i have a sister as well. and we're -- we live here. and we never know what could happen to us. >> reporter: sunnyvale police canvassed the neighborhood twice, but have little to go on. >> right now, we have a very vague description of the suspect. the suspect was wearing a mask. we feel that from the interview with the victim, the suspect is approximately 5'6" to 5'8" tall, medium build, and possibly with a hispanic accent. >> reporter: police say the victim's friend was asleep in her bedroom in the same apartment, and heard nothing. her dog also barked, but she didn't realize why. officers believe this is an isolated attack. garcia says from now on she's not taking any chances. >> i'm going to try to be more aware, lock my doors all the time, my windows, and be alert. >> reporter: sunnyvale police have also contacted other bay

badly hurt. the getaway driver and mystery man in a bulletproof vest went on a run. here's the video we're talking about. it shows the interior of the mexicali nightclub on oakland road. three men burst in, tried to snatch the owner. as you can see, one man wearing a bulletproof vest tried to drag the bar owner at gun point to a waiting suv. the club owner who police said was targeted over a drug debt is able to get free but is gunned down by the mystery man in the parking lot. the owner did survive. the suspect escaped and remains on the loose. what the security video didn't show, a bar patron who began shooting during the kidnapping attempt. the man shot two of the attackers, killing one instantly before being shot and killed himself. the other attacker was found dead in the black ford explorer found outside the club the next day. we'll have more at 6:00. and then again tonight at 11:00. right now, there's a statewide amber alert for a baby

boy and his mom, both of them kidnapped. authorities say 8-month-old sebastien and his mother, 18-year-o 18-year-olds, was taken from the home by the boy's father. he allegedly climbed in a window of her home around 2:00 this morning and took their son. the mom was abducted when she ran after them. he was last seen driving a 1991 honda civic with license plate number 5 voy 539. the race is on to shield money. if not, the money will be taken away. cities across the state are moving funds to keep them from the state. in santa clara tonight, they'll vote to move any stadium related projects in relation to the 49ers stadium from the agency to the newly created stadium authority. transferring assets to the

joints powers authority. the governor and legislator are getting ready to raid local redevelopment funds to help solve the state's fiscal crisis. >> will there be money left for the governor to take? >> there is not going to be any money left in san jose for the state to take. >> the state already took $62 million from the san jose redevelopment agency last year. and they plan to raid those same funds yet again. there's new information just how many people live here in the bay area. and it reveals that we're actually growing at a snail's pace. the new census shows the bay area added about 367,000 people in the last decade. that means we grew by about 5.4% since the last census in 2000. that's the slowest growth since the 1930s. a big change from the booming '90s when gre b region grew by more than 12%. here's a look at your hometown and how it stacks up. santa clara county, the fifth largest county slipped to sixth

in the latest census. alameda the seventh largest. contra costa was the fastest growing county over the past decade with a population now exceeding 1 million people for the first time. san francisco county, it dropped two spots to number 13. a tense night, and now a man is dead after a standoff with police. it started last night in the 1800 block of marin avenue near alameda and north berkeley. the first officer to arrive reported hearing multiple shots. he called in police negotiators, who evacuated homes near the scene. after hours of negotiations, police heard a single shot from inside the home. they later entered to find the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. police say they did not directly confront the man. new federal documents revealed what pg&e pipeline operators said just before that deadly blast in san bruno. that quote from one.

operators, operators apparently knew that a botched repair job in a milpitas control station was causing gas to flow uncontrollably. and that they couldn't fix the issue remotely. that set off a chain reaction. a half hour later, the pipeline in san bruno exploded. pg&e isn't saying if there's a connection yet. today we also learned why pg&e decided not to repair that flawed pipeline. the "mercury news" found a pg&e report from 1992 stating that most of the pipe that ran through san bruno did not need to be replaced because the wells met current standards. but federal investigators found more than 150 welding defects back in january. many of them dating back half a century. international news now. the unrest in libya is quickly becoming a political headache for president obama. since the crisis began, gas prices are up dramatically, and several congressmen are demanding action. the government announced gas prices could soon hit an average of $3.70 a gallon. that was nationwide.

sglrk yes, those are dead fish. a slew of dead fish floating in a harbor in redondo beach. biologists think the fish may have died from lack of oxygen after high winds kept the fish

from leaving the harbor. the cleanup is now under way to remove all the rotting fish before they create a toxic hazard. the debate rages on with prop 8. in the meantime, supporters of the gay marriage ban want a federal court to keep blocking same-sex unions. lawyers for the sponsors of prop 8 filed papers to urge the ban to stay in place. the obama administration recently announced it would no longer defend the federal law prohibiting the government from recognizing same-sex marriages. prop 8 lawyers argued the decision should have no effect on the state ban. two gay couples are asking the ninth circuit court to let same-sex marriages resume in california by lifting a stay on the lower court's order. topping our health watch tonight, hot flashes may have met their match. acupuncture it turns out may help relieve hot flashes in menopausal women who do not want to turn to hormone therapy. turkey researchers found it helped more than a placebo did.

they reported fewer mood swings. the study, however, did not reveal how long that relief last. well, weight loss on even just the thought of slimming down may help relieve depression symptoms in the obese. a new study by the university of pennsylvania reveals that people in many different kinds of weight loss programs experience mood improvements when on a diet. how much weight each person lost or didn't lose wasn't linked with the change in mood. it's not uncommon for musicians or veterans to experience ringing noises in their ears. it affects up to 50 million americans. it's called tinnitus. audiologists have found a successful treatment and it might surprise you. here's nbc's erica edwards. >> reporter: imagine going through life with this as background noise. >> a high-pitched ringing that is pretty much constant. never goes away. >> reporter: it's what life has been like for steve cooper who

has heard it for decades. the problem started after college, a time when he attended a lot of loud rock concerts. >> the eagles, the doobey brothers, chicago. >> reporter: tinnitus often stems from some kind of hearing loss and is common among older adults. doctors are seeing younger patients who have been exposed to loud music or gunfire from combat. to make up for the hearing loss, the brain fills that empty space with noise. >> very similar to phantom limb pain where those without a hand feel or sense things. >> are you still having difficulty with sleep? >> reporter: an audiologist has been treating some of the most severe cases of tinnitus with a device that looks like an mp3 player. patients listened to classical or new-abge music. over time the noise is reduced and the patient continues to listen to the relaxing music. >> we give them input in the area where there's damage so the

what's the fascination with mardi gras? >> we're natives. we love it. my dad was king of mardi gras the year i was born. >> we've never seen it this crowded. >> reporter: why do you think it's different this year? >> spring break. >> reporter: what? >> spring break. >> reporter: the thought is the spring breakers would come here instead. why do you come here instead of a sandy beach? >> this is where you go to party. >> is this a surprise? >> i'm not even sure what it would be. yeah, probably that. >> reporter: ah! stay away, stuff, really. the biggest surprise so far? >> the guy with the apron. >> reporter: that was it? >> yeah. >> reporter: those heels don't look very comfortable. but you're still out here for mardi gras. why? >> it's worth it. it's fun. it's a big party. it's fun. nice town, nice people. >> reporter: who does your hair? >> mail order. >> i come out here every year just to see the sights, see

other people's costumes, and to be seen. >> reporter: these people out here on bourbon street better live it up, because they don't have much time. in just under five hours, at midnight, mardi gras officially ends. and it is official. that's start of ash wednesday, the beginning of lent. they'll ask people to leave, perhaps go to church, go home, go to pillow, sidewalk, gutter, wherever some of these people are going to end up. i'm sure it's all of the above. >> well, until midnight, let the good times roll. >> bob, you've got a wife and kids here in the bay area. what's your curfew tonight so i can pass that along? they're on the phone in the newsroom. >> reporter: that's so funny, i just lost the earpiece. i have no idea what you just said. >> very good. well put. >> reporter: i'll have as much fun as i want. >> well said, bob. take care of yourself. see you later on.

in the past hour, not a whole lot of activity even across y eure eureka. generally it's all about high pressure that's building offshore. that will shield us here from any kind of a major activity here in the next 48 hours, keeping it mild as we head throughout wednesday. more sunshine, increasing temperatures, and then, of course, it's not going to last too long. as we get into thursday, a few showers coming back into the mix. by all means, tomorrow is the day to get outside. and enjoy it. 6:00 a.m., we'll start off cloudy, low 40s. by 11:00 a.m., mostly sunny and temperatures already in the 60s for the east bay. we'll start off with 40 in los gatos. 45 in gilroy. and mid-40s in the north bay. and san francisco giants right here in the nbc bay area as we head into friday. right here in san francisco, if you're doing any tailgating, temperatures in the 50s. winds west 5 to 15. partly cloudy skies. the game, though, it's going to be happening in arizona, just outside of scottsdale. and we're also looking at some

a royal frenzy in northern ireland today as prince william and his fiancee kate middleton paid a surprise visit during their visit to the uk. the little girl gave middleton flowers. one little girl said she was extremely happy to meet the future princess. >> i said to her, you're a very lucky lady. i'm very jealous. she says, i am very lucky lady. and i think you will be jealous. >> security was extremely tight due to the area's history of violence. by the way, the royal wedding takes place april 29th at west minister abbey. you have some of the charlie sheen overdose? how to keep him off of your mind and computer.
